Customs warehousing
Secure storage solutions for sensitive goods, property and customs processes
In international supply chains, situations are increasingly arising in which goods cannot or should not be released for free circulation immediately. Customs regulations, unclear ownership structures or strategic dispositions make secure storage necessary.
With NTS’s storage warehouses and customs warehouse solutions, companies receive a legally compliant, transparent and flexible storage infrastructure – tailored to complex goods and customs processes.
What is a bonded warehouse?
A bonded warehouse is used for the legally and organisationally clearly regulated storage of goods whose further use, customs clearance or transfer of ownership has not yet been completed.
Typical reasons for storage:
• Unresolved or shared ownership
• Delayed customs clearance or customs inspections
• Temporary storage for transit to third countries
• Strategic storage prior to market entry or resale
In the bonded warehouse, goods remain physically secure, legally clearly assigned and documented in a traceable manner at all times.
Bonded warehousing: flexibility and liquidity advantages
Bonded warehousing allows non-Union goods to be stored without immediate payment of customs duties and import taxes. Duties are only payable when the goods are actually released for free circulation.
For companies, this means:
• Preservation of liquidity
• More flexible planning of international goods flows
• Time savings for sales, production or further processing decisions
• Reduction of economic risks in uncertain sales markets
Customs warehousing is therefore not only a logistical tool, but also a business management control factor.

Frequently asked questions / FAQ – Custody warehouses & customs warehousing
What is the difference between a custody warehouse and a customs warehouse?
A custody warehouse is used for the legally compliant storage and warehousing of goods for up to 90 days whose further use, transfer of ownership or release has not yet been completed.
A customs warehouse is a special type of warehouse where non-Union goods are stored under customs supervision without immediately incurring customs duties and import charges. In addition, goods can be stored without any time restrictions or, for example, assembled on an order-by-order basis for shipment to third countries.
In practice, both types of storage are often combined to combine legal certainty and economic flexibility.
When does a custodial warehouse make sense?
A bonded warehouse is needed when:
- Ownership is still unclear
- Goods are awaiting official, contractual or internal approval
- Supply chains are interrupted or delayed
- High-value or sensitive goods need to be stored securely
- Temporary storage for transit to third countries
The bonded warehouse provides time, legal certainty and transparency.
What advantages does customs warehousing offer companies?
Customs warehousing enables:
- Deferral of customs and import duties
- Preservation of liquidity for high-value goods
- Flexible scheduling depending on the sales market
- Reduction of economic risks in uncertain market conditions
Customs warehousing is therefore a strategic tool for managing goods and capital.
How long can goods remain in the storage or customs warehouse?
The storage period depends on:
the type of storage selected
the customs regulations
individual agreements
In principle, both short-term and long-term storage is possible – always in compliance with the applicable legal requirements.
Who is responsible for the goods in the storage facility?
Responsibilities are clearly defined in the contract.
NTS National-Transport-Service GmbH ensures:
- secure storage conditions
- transparent inventory management
- documented processes
Ownership, customs status and liability remain clearly defined at all times.
